So I can finally reveal a big project for me! I was tasked with creating a poster for the upcoming Hero Complex Gallery art show ‘King For A Day’, an art tribute to the body of work by acclaimed author Stephen King. As my first art show, my first screenprint and a brilliant author and creative mind it was needless to say I felt a bit of pressure coming into this one. As I filed through the works of Stephen King, I quickly noted one thing… I haven’t really read or watched many of King’s works. So i had to draw on what was most personal to me, the one movie that I was most drawn to and the one I had a connection with. This was most definitely ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. I love this movie, it is a powerful film and most definitely worthy of its ‘Classic’ status. I knew I needed to STAY AWAY from the Struzan template, especially for this poster. The iconic nature of Struzan’s poster is embedded in this film now so I knew I needed to stay clear of it otherwise people would just think it is a rip-off or poor attempt at a copy of it. I decided to go with a very different route with this one, playing on a more subtle nature of the film and themes. A quiet, more reflective tone emerged and I decided to seek the theme of Hope in the poster. Once I decided on that, this is where it all ended up! Hope you guys enjoy it!
